The active ingredient listed is usually dextromethorphan (DM). Other cough suppressants include camphor, eucalyptus oil, and menthol. Combination cough products have more than one active ingredient. They have both guaifenesin and dextromethorphan.
This combination medication is used to relieve coughs caused by the common cold, bronchitis, and other breathing illnesses. Guaifenesin belongs to a class of drugs known as expectorants. It works by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways, clearing congestion, and making breathing easier.
Dosage adults and children over 12years: 10ml three to four times daily.
Children 6-12years: one 5ml spoonful the dose may be repeated after four hours if required, but not more than 4 doses in any 24 hours.
Children 2-6years: 2.5ml four times daily
Treatment should not exceed 3 days.
